i’ve encountered the same problem with creating an event through a page, and not being able to message and update people unless they’re “fans”. I wish i’d read this first…

I set up the events as myself for this reason – I would like to be able to email a reminder about the event.

You can always create an event yourself and then link to it from your business page.
