Learning to Twitter

When Craig Cannings of VAClassroom.com named Twitter as one of the three most important social media applications in one of his teleseminars, I realized it was something I needed to learn more about, but I didn’t get around to checking it out until a couple of months ago when Julie Bestry encouraged me to sign up so she could help me promote this new blog. Since that time I’ve been playing around with it, and have picked up 38 followers along the way, but I’m still trying to understand how to use it effectively. To that end, I’ve flagged a number of blog posts which others have written on the topic, and knowing that there are many others in my shoes, I’m sharing those links with you as I read them.

Andrea J. Stenberg blogged about business uses for Twitter in her recent posts, 7 Ways to Use Twitter For Fun & Profit and How to Use Twitter to Build Business Relationships. She describes Twitter as an excellent way to stay on top of new technology, world events, industry leaders, friends, and colleagues, as well as a tool for networking with potential joint venture partners and others. Be sure to read her blog to learn how Andrea is making Twitter work for her.

Mike Volpe of HubSpot, another recent convert to Twitter, shares his tips in his post, How to Use Twitter for Marketing and PR, where he demonstrates that Twitter can have benefits for large organizations as well as solopreneurs, and gave some great pointers this week on the Top 5 Most Annoying Things People Do On Twitter.

Chris Brogan has written a great post, 50 Ideas on Using Twitter for your Business, that includes lots of do’s and don’ts that are especially helpful for those of us who are trying to figure out what it’s all about.

Of course, there is a lot more information out there than this, but after reading even these few posts, I feel I have a better handle on what I should do (and what I shouldn’t do) going forward.

By the way, all of the bolded words above are links to the individual’s Twitter profile, so if you’re looking for some interesting people to follow, I’ve just given you five! To follow me, please click on the big Twitter logo in this post.
