I read a lot of blogs, and although I often link to them in my posts, it’s rare that I dedicate a whole post to one particular blog. In fact, I don’t know whether I’ve ever done that, but I recently came across one that’s worthy of such attention. It’s called My Self-Employed Life: Earning my worth my own way and it’s written by Mikelann Valterra, author of Why Women Earn Less and founder of The Women’s Earning Institute.
Mikelann addresses a topic that many of us are reluctant to discuss: The Almighty Dollar. After all, nice girls don’t talk about money, right?
According to their website,
“The Women’s Earning Institute … specializes in understanding the emotional and psychological connections behind why women undersell themselves and provides women the tools to make more money and earn at their potential.”
Some of Mikelann’s recent articles include Raising Rates without Losing Clients, Small Business Recession Woes: avoid the temptation to discount your services, What to say when someone says, “Can I pick your brain?” and It’s time to tighten your cancellation policy.
If those titles don’t sound like something you need to read, good for you! You’re obviously doing something right. But if you’ve ever struggled with setting your rates and communicating them with confidence, you owe it to yourself to check out Mikelann’s blog. She doesn’t post often, but when she does, it’s well worth a read.

Wow! Mikelann has some really great information on her site! I worry about charging what I know my services are worth, especially these days when everyone is watching every penny.
Mikelann has some nice free articles, too. My favorite is “If Everybody Can Afford You, You’re Not Charging Enough!”. Words to live by
Oh, and thanks for finding me another RSS feed to grab, Janet. I think I’m down to working 3 hours a day because I’m so busy reading all my feeds!
Melodee, you’ll just have to raise your rates to make up for all that time!
You know, maybe I AM too affordable
After all, the more you read, the more you learn, and the more valuable you are to your clients!
