I recently set up a WordPress blog for one of my clients and installed several plug-ins which she requested. One of the plug-ins was WordPress Automatic upgrade, which allows a user to automatically upgrade the WordPress installation to the latest one. Last week we used it to upgrade to version 2.7, and the first thing we noticed was the new interface. New users should enjoy the layout, which is actually more functional than earlier versions, but for people who are accustomed to the old dashboard, it will take a little getting used to.

The trouble began when my client called me because she was unable to add an image to one of her posts. A Google search quickly revealed that she was not alone with this problem. I tried several of the suggestions that I found, without success, and ultimately ended up switching her blog back to version 2.6. Fortunately, I had backed everything up before installing the upgrade, but even so, I had to make some adjustments to the database before we could once again upload images.
Needless to say, I have disabled the Automatic upgrade plug-in and will wait a while before upgrading any of my own or my clients’ blogs.

I’ve suffered from upgraditis several times. It’s kind of like cars; never buy the new model the first year it comes out.
I’ve got that plug-in, too. And I was just about to upgrade. I think I’ll wait until you say it’s OK, Janet
Jacki, I’m not usually so quick out of the gate – I am still using XP and strongly discouraging people from getting Vista… (Yes, I know you’re a Mac user, so you’re probably laughing at me right now!)
Melodee, I’ll try to remember to keep you posted!
I’m not upgrading WordPress any time soon. I’m going to wait for at least another month…
Good idea, Alex!
Hey, Janet. Take a look at Darren Rowse’s post on upgrading to 2.7: http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/12/28/how-to-upgrade-to-wordpress-27-safely-and-ensure-compatibility/
It looks pretty good, but I’ll still wait until you’ve upgraded without a problem before I try it
I did it, Melodee! The important step (which I missed last time) is to deactivate all plug-ins before you upgrade.
Cool! I’ll have to give it a try…one of these days…
