Tips and Products for Organizing Your Desk

Is your desk cluttered with paper?Today is ACCO Brands Canada’s fourth annual Organize Your Desk Day, a national program designed to assist small to medium?sized businesses help their employees organize their work spaces and become more efficient and effective every day.

In honour of this special day, I’ve compiled a few resources to help you organize your desk.

Dealing with paperwork is a major component of organizing your desk, and Hellen Buttigieg, Certified Professional Organizer®, Life Coach and Gemini-Nominated HGTV host, suggests some great products to help you, whether you are a piler or a filer. Hellen actually suggested one of my own personal favourites!

Professional organizer Heather Burke of Ottawa, Ontario, offers another great tip for getting paperwork off your desk, especially if you work in a small office or home office.

While clearing your desk, you will probably come across some documents you no longer need to keep. Find out what to keep, what to recycle, what to shred, and how to choose a shredder from Geralin Thomas, a Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization in Cary, North Carolina.

Professional organizer Clare Kumar of Toronto, Ontario, shared some workspace organization tips with Better Living host, Val Cole. Catch the video and learn about a really great contest on Clare’s Streamlife blog.

Janet, since my move I have been struggling with my desk. I still feel like a dog after the move, having to make extra efforts to keep it organized and functional, so this article is so helpful at this moment. Digging in and will keep you posted on the changes!

One thing about moving – it is a lot of work, but the perfect opportunity to get everything organized the way you’d like it to be. Good luck!

I also moved in 2010 and found that I had more paper (new, not needing filing) than I would probably use in a lifetime. The downsizing process benefited a local church. Now my office is lean and better organized with very little non-essential paper in it. What a relief!

It’s always great when the stuff you don’t need is something you KNOW will be useful to someone else!

Great tips! It is fun to see what others use and recommend. I am using my action file/command center and trying to make it a daily habit to use my tickler file! Here is a close up of the action file. I am following my own instructions: when processing paper I HAVE to decide where each piece goes (once I pick it up from my inbox) instead of indecision, putting it down and moving on to the next item! It is good to follow my own process!! :)

Thanks for sharing, Tracy – especially the photos! I find it really helpful to see a system in action.
I’m two days late, but today I finished ALL my filing – right down to the postcards and greeting cards I’ve received over the last year or so that just needed to be put in their respective homes. There was more than I realized, but it didn’t take very long either.
