A Politically Correct Christmas

kitten santaEvery year it seems to get harder and harder to say the right thing. Is it okay to say Merry Christmas? Is it better to say Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays? Or is it presumptuous to assume that someone is celebrating a holiday at all? Yet not saying anything doesn’t feel right either.

I’ve tackled this topic before, and I really don’t have anything new to say about it, so instead I’d like to share this anonymous poem I found online.

‘Twas the night before Christmas and Santa’s a wreck…
How to live in a world that’s politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to “Elves”,
“Vertically Challenged” they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the North Pole,
were alleged by the union, to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished without much propriety,
released to the wilds, by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear,
that Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his beautiful sleigh,
because the ruts were deemed dangerous by the EPA,
And millions of people were calling the Cops,
when they heard sled noises upon their roof tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe, had his workers quite frightened,
and his fur trimmed red suit was called “unenlightened”.

To show you the strangeness of today’s ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose.
He went to Geraldo, in front of the Nation,
demanding millions in over-due workers compensation.

So…half of the reindeer were gone, and his wife
who suddenly said she’d had enough of this life,
joined a self-help group, packed and left in a whiz,
demanding from now on that her title was Ms.

And as for gifts…why, he’d never had the notion
that making a choice could cause such commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur…
Which meant nothing for him or nothing for her.
Nothing to aim, Nothing to shoot,
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls and nothing for just boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific,
Nothing that’s warlike or non-pacifistic.

No candy or sweets…they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish upon the truth.
And fairy tales…while not yet forbidden,
were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden,
for they raised the hackles of those psychological,
who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football…someone might get hurt,
besides – playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist and should be passe.
and Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled and perplexed,
he just couldn’t figure out what to do next?
He tried to be merry he tried to be gay,
but you must have to admit he was having a very bad day.
His sack was quite empty, it was flat on the ground,
nothing fully acceptable was anywhere to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might,
give to us all, without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy – with no indecision,
each group of people in every religion.
Every race, every hue,
everyone, everywhere…even you!
So here is that gift, it’s price beyond worth…

“MAY YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES, ENJOY PEACE ON EARTH”

Why Wait for New Year’s? Change can begin any day…

CarlyFor what seems like a very long time, I’ve been trying to be more active and spend less time sitting in front of a screen (my laptop during working hours, my TV during downtime). I love to walk, but I can come up with any number of excuses not to:

  • It’s too cold/hot/rainy/snowy/windy
  • I’m too busy
  • There’s no one to walk with

They’re all terrible excuses, especially when you consider how much I enjoy walking, and of course the health benefits. Each one can be countered:

  • Dress appropriately
  • A break will allow me to clear my head and re-energize
  • I can listen to music, podcasts, or recorded teleclasses on my iPhone

Self-discipline obviously wasn’t cutting it, so I’ve just undergone a major life change that’s going to make it so walking is no longer optional, but a mandatory part of each and every day. Yes – I’ve adopted a dog!

Carly is about two years old and apparently a cross between a Border Collie and a Chocolate Lab. We have already become good friends and I look forward to many walks with her. Hopefully my cat will soon come out of hiding long enough to make friends with her too!

If you’d like a new furry friend in your life, I highly recommend adopting a homeless pet. Most shelters and rescue groups do a thorough screening to make sure you choose one that’s right for your family and your lifestyle, and it’s very rewarding to know you’re providing an unwanted animal with a home. If you don’t want the stress of raising a kitten or puppy, there are lots of adults, both young and old, ready to love you. Just click on the logo below to begin your search.

There I am again!

I’ve been so busy with client projects this fall that I haven’t had time to submit content to as many crowdsourced or collaborative blog posts as I’d have liked, but I did participate in 17 Best Tips for Attracting Blog Traffic.

I was on People in Connection Internet TV earlier this month, and invite you to watch the video:

It seems that people like what I write, because NewsClipTV featured my Tips for Organizing a Business Event, and Linda Samuels included an excerpt from my review of her book, The Other Side of Organized on her website.

Even better, people like my work, as evidenced by Kathy Stinson’s post, Did you create your own website?

I’m sorry to be hogging the spotlight – please feel free to brag about your recent successes here in the comments!

POC Conference 2011: The Afterglow

As mentioned in my last post, I recently attended the POC Conference in Toronto. It was a fabulous experience and, in addition to having the honour of presenting to 70 professional organizers from all over Canada, I heard some excellent speakers, including Joe Roberts, The Skid Row CEO and Margarita Ibbott of Downshifting – Professional Organizing Solutions and Linked Learning. I talked a bit about what I learned on People in Connection Internet TV on Monday.

Learning is an important aspect of any conference, but so is networking, and I did lots of that too. I spoke with 15 of my past and current clients in one day, and was amazed to realize that was more than 10% of the conference delegates! Here are just a few of the special people I connected with:

I was thrilled to find out that Janine Adams, who came all the way from St. Louis, Missouri, was as excited to meet me as I was to meet her!

The only downside was that after such a long and busy day (I left home at 7:00 AM and was go-go-go until about 10:30 PM), combined with the time change and some noisy hotel guests (not POC members, I’m sure!), I was way too tired to go to WordCamp Toronto as planned.

On Sunday morning, I put on a black sweater and pants and deep red jacket, unintentionally choosing POC colours. I guess you can take Janet out of POC, but you can’t take POC out of Janet!

The Janet Finder

A few years ago, a student I knew set up a web page called The Sarah Finder so her friends and family could keep track of her busy schedule. Sometimes I think that’s not such a bad idea!

This is what I’ll be up to over the next few days:

Professional Organizers in CanadaOn Saturday, I’ll be joining members of Professional Organizers in Canada for the third day of their National Conference in Toronto, where I’ll be presenting on Blogging: Beyond the Basics. In addition, I’ll have the opportunity to attend other educational sessions and enjoy time networking with clients and former colleagues and hopefully meeting many new people as well.

WordCamp TorontoOn Sunday, I’m attending Day Two of WordCamp Toronto 2011, and I’m looking forward to learning even more about my favourite technology, reconnecting with some of the people I met at last year’s event, and meeting other WordPress users and developers.

People in ConnectionOn Monday, I’ll be sharing the highlights of both events with viewers of People in Connection TV, as they broadcast live from their new location at the Movie Palace on Concession Street. Watch the show online at 11:00 AM.

What are you doing this weekend? :)
