The People in My “Neighbourhood”

When I read Elaine Shannon’s recent post, Who are the People in your Neighborhood?, I was so inspired that I decided to answer her question in my own blog. Following Elaine’s example, I’d like to introduce you to some of the Very Important People in my world.

One of my VIPs is Jacki Hollywood Brown. I met Jacki through Professional Organizers of Canada, and have always been impressed with her initiative and her dedication to the association, particularly her work in bringing value to French-speaking members. She now serves as POC’s Vice-President, in addition to being a busy mom and military wife, and running her organizing business, J-organize. She is also the only professional organizer I know who specializes in equestrian organizing!

I met Marie Mushing of People in Connection shortly after starting my business. After seeing my profile on a Yahoo group for local businesses, she invited me to attend one of her network events. Although neither of us could have known it at the time, that was the start of a great business and personal relationship. We have referred clients and subcontracted work to one another, and frequently get together to share business ideas. She has recently launched a free membership site called PICFIT where we, along with other members, can stay in regular contact and encourage each other to meet our goals to lead healthier lives. Marie actually lives fairly close to me, so I guess she really is in my neighbourhood. J

My third VIP is someone I’ve never met in person, although we have connected on Skype several times. Neil Matthews is a WordPress genius from “over the Pond” that I met on Twitter, and I’ve tapped into his expertise on numerous occasions. He has recently re-launched his WordPress Owners Club, offering support and training to WordPress blog owners who want to learn how to maintain and develop their site like a pro.

Again following Elaine’s example, I will close by asking you: Who are the cool, funny, out of the box, brilliant, expert People in your Neighborhood? If you decide to answer on your own blog, please leave a link in the Comments section!

I’m on TV! (Internet TV, that is)

As founder of the Golden Horseshoe Virtual Assistants Group, I was recently interviewed for the People in Connection Internet TV show, and my interview is now online at http://www.peopleinconnection.tv.

If you’d like to know more about virtual assistants, learn about our group, or just see my smiling face, be sure to check it out!

Facebook Revisited

It doesn’t seem so very long ago that I was singing the praises of Facebook for both personal and professional use, does it? How quickly things change in our high tech world!

At a BizLaunch seminar earlier this year, the facilitator quoted some interesting statistics. He said that during the first half of 2008, Facebook was the most popular social networking site for small businesses, but that during the second half of the year, Twitter had taken over. Until he said that, I hadn’t realized that I had gradually made that shift in my own preferences. More and more, I’m finding Twitter to be my favourite resource for interesting websites and blogs and keeping track of news from my business contacts.

I still like Facebook, because it’s the main way I stay in touch with old school friends and distant family members, but I no longer find it valuable for business networking. Instead, I find myself with an Inbox full of unread messages from people inviting me to participate in certain discussion groups or events, but very little real communication going on. Considering that I already receive email from some of these people and follow many others on Twitter, I really don’t need a second or third notification about these things.

To make things worse, Facebook, apparently feeling threatened by the popularity of Twitter, has restructured their site in such a way that it’s harder to find the information that does interest me. The time has come for me to start removing any “friends” that I don’t have any real connection with, in order to eliminate the clutter and continue enjoying the site on a personal level. After all, there are plenty of other sites for business networking, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and People in Connection. See you there?

Local Business Networking Online

Traditionally, business networking has been associated with live events, where business owners and executives can get together in a formal or informal setting. More recently, we’ve seen the growing popularity of online networks, where we can network with people from around the globe from the comfort of our own homes or offices.

Lately I’ve witnessed the development of something that combines the two: online networks dedicated to specific regions. This is a fantastic idea, especially for people who only work with local clients, but don’t have the time, or perhaps the budget, to get out to a lot of live networking events. Becoming active in this type of network means that when you do meet someone face-to-face, they feel like they already know you, because they’ve seen your picture, read your blog posts, and possibly conversed with you in the discussion forum. Not only is this a great time-saver, it’s a wonderful tool for people who are shy about introducing themselves to strangers.

If you’re in the United States, you can find a local network in your area by going to Inside Area Codes and clicking on your state. As far as I know, we don’t have a comparable site here in Canada, but we definitely have regional social networks. I’ve joined the newly launched People in Connection site and am finding it a great way to stay in touch with people I’ve met at live People in Connection events and to connect with others I haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet.

If you belong to a local networking site, how is it working for you? Feel free to include a link to the site in your comments, so others may check it out.
