Let’s shoot some photos!

As I mentioned the other day, I’m getting back into photography, something I’ve been wanting to do since the beginning of the year.

I’ve even treated myself to a new camera, a Canon PowerShot SX710 HS. I love that it has the capabilities of my old SLR, the portability of my Canon PowerShot SD1100IS, and the ability to post to Facebook and other sites through Wi-Fi like my iPhone.

I took the above shot a few minutes from home this past weekend, and I’m looking forward to many more outings. Though I suspect as the weather gets colder, I’ll be taking a lot of these:

Yes, this is an everyday scene in my house!

I have so much to learn as I get serious about having fun with my photography.

My sister recently took an online course in Nature Photography, which she highly recommends, but I’m concerned about my ability to complete 12 assignments in two weeks.

When she showed me her virtual classroom, I couldn’t help but notice how different it was from when I took a correspondence course through the New York Institute of Photography back in the 1990s. Back then, I had to listen to my lessons on cassette tape and read the accompanying printed material. Next I would shoot photos to complete the assignment, take my film in for processing, and mail my selected photos in. Then I’d have to wait to receive my instructor’s feedback, also on cassette tape, by return mail. Now you can complete a lesson online, take your photos, upload them, and get feedback from the instructor as well as other students, all within the same day!

Whether I decide to sign up for a course or just read lots of photography books and blogs, focus on improving my photographic skills or learning more about using Photoshop Elements (which I’ve been using since 2007, but have barely scratched the surface in terms of what it can do), I’m very excited about what lies ahead, and I hope you’ll come along with me on the journey!

I eliminate stress for my clients by hosting, monitoring, and maintaining their WordPress sites so they don’t have to worry about security, downtime or performance issues. When I’m away from my desk, I enjoy reading, photography, cooking, watching movies, drinking tea, and spending time with my family.

I’m excited for and with you, Janet. Great to see those bright colours in your first pic, now that they’ve all but disappeared now, from where I live. I love the way you arranged those two wonderful pics of your pets here too.

What a difference 20 years make in how we take photos and photography classes!

Don’t let “12 assignments in 2 weeks” dissuade you from taking Joy’s class. There’s no pressure at all to complete them by the end of term, Joy is generous with extensions and my classmates and I are still posting and commenting on each other’s work 3 weeks after the official end of class. (Joy is still in there too.)

Looking forward to seeing more of your photos.

Our colours are pretty well gone now too, after this week’s rain and wind. Knowing it was possibly the last beautiful fall day was all the incentive I needed to get out on Sunday afternoon!

Thanks for your encouragement about the course. I think some structure would help me to keep moving forward. I’m just wondering if winter’s the best time to do it, or if I should work on Photoshop Elements first – I have plenty of older stuff I could play with! There’s a course through Lynda.com which I can access through my local library.

Although I love some of my winter nature photos, it wouldn’t be my first choice of season for taking a nature photography class. I don’t even know if Joy offers it at that time of year.

I’m sure one way or another you’ll find the right course at the right time. In the meantime, you can have lots of fun with your editing — and taking more pics with your new camera.

    Happy shooting!
