Unlike many people, summer isn’t my favourite time of year. I don’t do well in the heat and humidity, I don’t have a garden, and I miss my sister, who is usually away for most of the summer. This summer, however, has been great, and I’m amazed that we’re already nearly halfway through August.

So what’s different this year? A few things, actually.

For starters, the weather hasn’t been as extreme as usual. Some people are complaining that it’s not hot enough or that it’s too rainy, but not me. It’s nice not to have to have the air conditioner running 24-7 for weeks on end (saves a lot of money too!). And the rain has kept the lawns lush and green and brought lots of yummy local produce to the market.

Speaking of which, I’ve gone to the local outdoor market nearly every Saturday and have been enjoying lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

We got away for a week, and unlike last year, when it took me a couple of days to transition from work mode to vacation mode, I mellowed out almost instantly when we arrived at the cottage. It probably helped that it was our third time staying there!

Our host placed a jar of cut lilies on our deck table, and I had fun photographing them throughout the week as they went through various phases.

We took a second week off after returning from the cottage, but I found it much harder to stay in vacation mode than I did last year. However, I did manage to get out to Eramosa Karst Conservation Area, a place I’ve never been, even though it’s only about a ten-minute drive from home.

I also managed to take most of the Civic Holiday off, having lunch with my friend Susanna at NàRoma Pizza Bar, followed by a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens.

I’ve had some great phone conversations with my sister and my friend Jane in Montreal. And of course, I’ve been reading – that goes without saying, as well as engaging in hobbies other than photography.

It’s easy to see why the summer is going so fast! I hope the remaining weeks will be just as satisfying.

What have been the highlights of your summer?
